1. 1989 Arcade Bar - http://1989.com.au/
Fully stocked with booze, projected video games and your favourite old school video consoles, this bar can be found behind a pretty average looking building's downstair's door. It's small, quirky and a fun place to beat your friends at Tekken whilst sipping on a beer.
2. Grandma's Bar - https://www.grandmasbarsydney.com.au/
Don't you just love attentive bartenders who will whip you up a special cocktail if you ask nicely? A cosy place with a chilled vibe perfect for the home-sick expats of Sydney but also for a catch up with friends. Your grandma would approve of the decor but certainly would give you a telling off if she finds you strolling out of here tipsy, which is easily done as the drinks are yummy!
3. Old Mate's Place - oldmates.sydney
An old library makeshifts into a rooftop bar, have you heard of anything more unorthodox? Well if you're not afraid of the unknown venture straight into this magical place with plants hanging down beside you and old books layering up the walls. Their gin cocktails can have essences of smoked peaches and their rum cocktails are flavoured with grape and rhubarb. Yum!
4. Shady Pines Saloon - https://shadypinessaloon.com/
Have you ever wondered what it would be like to visit one of those Wild West type saloons right before a real cowboy showdown occurs? Well, me too. Shady Pines Saloon offers this exact vibe, except there are no cowboys shooting eachother. You don't need to spend too much to be transported to a whole new world and time, you can just take the trip here for a good old fashioned drink, peanuts and live music.
5. Soda Factory - http://www.sodafactory.com.au
Dollar Dog Tuesdays, $1 hotdogs with all sorts of toppings! Live music, film showings of your favourite classics, soul music nights... There's so much going on at the Soda Factory. Hidden behind a coca cola Soda fridge, and although not so secret, this place has fun written all over it.
6. The Baxter Inn - https://thebaxterinn.com/
Hidden behind an old, tattered, loading dock this place is Sydney's very own underground whiskey spot. Honestly, their whiskey collection is impressive and this place has often found itself on 'the world's best bars' lists.
7. Uncle Ming's - https://www.unclemings.com.au/
A personal favourite of mine, one of the best hidden bars in Sydney and also they serve up some of the best dumplings ever. Their drink collection is amazing with Japanese whiskeys taking up mostly all of the drinks menu. You could spend a whole day or night here, easily.
8. PS40 - So hidden I couldn't even find a website.
Good luck trying to find this one... This place is an actual Soda Factory and they make their own concoctions and potions, they even promise that some are natural remedies to the common cold. Experimental cocktails and sodas are available for those who are patient enough to find it.
And that's all I have for now. I spent nearly a year in Australia and a majority of that time in Sydney. Sydney is so easy to fall in love with as is the rest of Australia and one night a friend of mine randomly decided to visit as many secret bars as possible. Some of these we found along the way and others were shown to me by the wonderful friends I had made in Sydney.
I'll write more on the beauty of Australia, especially the undeniably beautiful landscapes and views. Even a bus journey is filled with breathtaking sights. But for now, if you're there or on your way there soon, commit some time to the gems I've listed above.
Lastly, if you've been to more secret bars in Sydney or Melbourne or anywhere for that matter I'd love to know so please get in touch via Instagram @outofofficess or Subscribe to get in touch.
Since the main focus on this blog was cocktails it's only right to end this off with a... Cheers!
